baby blessings

Blessings are secular. I have no religious affiliations. They can take place anywhere, anytime.

I often encourage parents that a good period is around 3-4 months old, as this helps mark symbolically the end of what’s known as the ‘fourth trimester’.

This gives you enough time to heal from the birth, get to know each other, and begin to settle into the never-ending ride of NOT KNOWING WHAT THE HELL YOU ARE DOING.

This is also a good time as often the help and support that may (or may not!) have been present immediately after the birth begins to wane. My baby blessings can not only help you to integrate aspects of your newfound identity as a mother, they can also gently remind your family and friends how much support you still need as a new family finding their feet.

I have many beautiful options that you can explore and combine to suit your particular family, please see below.

Why blessings?

The language of blessing is invocation, a calling forth.

To bless is to sanctify; to recognise the presence of grace. A blessing confers well-being or prosperity upon ourselves or another.

John O’Donohue writes in his book To Bless the Space Between Us, “The word blessing evokes a sense of warmth and protection; it suggests that no life is alone or unreachable. Each life is clothed in a raiment of spirit that secretly links it to everything else. Though suffering and chaos befall us, they can never quench that inner light.”

A baby blessing is a deeply enriching ritual for all who are connected to the child. Baby blessings are an expanding experience: in awareness, in renewed connections to the very best in ourselves, in others, and in life itself. Celebrating the joy and the promise of the new life among us, we honour the mother and her transformation through the birth process. We thank her, and all mothers, for the incredible gift of life.

I was always struck by the fact that weddings have prevailed in secular Australia, and we of course still celebrate the end of life with funerals. But we have no meaningful, consistent equivalent to celebrate possibly the most important life transition of all - it’s beginning. It is my mission to honour all babies upon their arrival into this world, which is why I offer baby blessings free to all couples I have married, and keep my prices for all those parents who are new to my work incredibly affordable.
